Sega Rally was the flagship title for the Sega Saturn and rightly so. I actually remember owning a Sony Playstation with Ridge Racer and still being envious of Saturn owners having this arcade game in their lounge.
The Saturn came out at the time of my life where I could only afford one system and I did choose Sony’s console — I remember watching the game’s attract mode playing in Comet and on many an occasion nearly making the jump to own Sega’s console just for this game. A number of years later and I did manage to get myself a Saturn console and this game — and yes it does play sublimely and it’s just as good as it’s arcade brethren. Playing now, the graphics have not aged too well — the Lancia and Celica cars though still handle like a dream as you attempt to guide them around the blocky brown and green landscapes.
Qualify in time, and you get the dreamy voice of the lady saying ‘Fiiiinishhh’ — miss a check point and its game over.
Scoring the 2007 revival was fun, brought back many memories and did insist on keeping the game over music from the arcade original.
